Outreach

I have 20 years of experience conducting university environmental sciences outreach programs in partnership with community educators, teachers, conservationists, and scientists. Starting in 2004, I began to expand the scope of my work internationally in collaboration with colleagues in South Africa, Denmark, and more recently India. In the future, I plan to work increasingly in international settings, focusing on how community green spaces can be used to promote science education, global understanding, and civic participation. Major Initiatives over the past 10 years funded by the National Science Foundation

Garden Mosaics. Youth learn about the connections of plants to people and cultures, develop ongoing mentoring relationships with elder community gardeners, and conduct action projects to benefit their neighborhoods.

Cornell Science Inquiry Partnerships. Graduate students work with secondary school teachers to integrate current science research into classroom inquiry activities.

Environmental Inquiry. A series of publications for secondary students and teachers focusing on inquiry learning and the nature of science.

Explorations from an Aerial Perspective. Youth use aerial photographs and maps to learn about and help improve their communities.
